Review: Hagar and band deliver show of the summer

If you are a fan of the Sammy Hagar-era of Van Halen, then this past Friday’s concert in The Woodlands was just what you needed.

“The Red Rocker” Sammy Hagar brought “The Best of All Worlds” tour to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands on Friday (Aug. 23, 2024) and dazzled the capacity crowd with more than two hours of music, which leaned heavily on the Hagar-era of Van Halen music, much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Hagar, 76, was joined by fellow Van Halen bandmate and bassist, Michael Anthony. Also joining Hagar on tour this summer is drummer, Jason Bonham, and guitar maestro, Joe Satriani. The quartet braved the Texas heat and never missed a beat dishing out a 21-song, 14 of which were Van Halen classics.

Hagar walked on stage with the words “Hello baby” and the rock show commenced as the band opened with “Good Enough” from the 1986 album, “5150.” This was followed by “Poundcake” and “Runaround” before Hagar found his back to a song from his solo career, “There’s Only One Way to Rock.”

With the band and the fans pouring sweat on this humid Texas summer night, the tribute to the music of Van Halen continued with performances of the songs “Judgement Day,” “Summer Nights” and “Top of the World.” The group even reached back to the David Lee Roth era and unleashed popular songs “Panama” and a Michael Anthony vocal performance of “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love.”

Satriani, a guitar icon himself, was the perfect choice to help pay tribute to the late, great Eddie Van Halen, but Satriani was able to shine as well when he performed his well known solo instrumental track, “Satch Boogie,” during the Friday night set.

Hagar performed several more of his solo career material, such as “Eagles Fly,” “Mas Tequila,” “Heavy Metal” and, of course, “I Can’t Drive 55.”

Hagar and company closed the spectacular night of music with a medley of material with songs “Space Station #5” by Montrose, Hagar’s first band, “Big Foot” from his band Chickenfoot, and “Jump,” arguably the most popular Van Halen song of all time. The group then ended the night with “When It’s Love.”

This concert had the makings of being the event of the summer, and it lived up to that hype as thousands of Texas-rockers stood and cheered in unison for over two hours to celebrate the music of Van Halen once more.
